March 7, 2010 Estate Tax Law Changes-first
I was lucky enough to attend a financial planning seminar recently (thanks to Manuel Roberto of Merrill Lynch for setting it up) and heard local attorney Kimberly Jackson speak. There have been some big changes in tax laws for 2010, which of course Congress can change again if they wish. But for now, apparently, there is no estate tax (so dying in 2010 is probably a good thing if one's estate to be passed to heirs is sizable). But Ms. Jackson also mentioned a big change of which I'd not heard, which is, there is no step-up in basis of assets to the date of death, which could have significant income tax implications. We will learn more.
